Our topics:

Autumn 1 – Only one me

Our topic this term is called ‘Only one me’. Through a range of fiction and non-fiction books, we will be learning about what makes us who we are- our true unique selves. We will learn about emotions and how our actions can affect others. We will be discussing what makes us happy and how we can make others happy.  We will be looking at coping strategies, exploring our senses, investigating healthy and unhealthy foods and finding out how we can continue to grow as healthy, confident individuals.

Autumn 2- Through the keyhole.

Our topic this term is called “Through the keyhole”. We will explore our local area and learn all about its history. We will learn geographical facts about where we live and go on a trip to St Fagan’s to look at how people lived in the past including life in schools. It will give us a chance to talk about what makes us proud living in our community and our favourite things about where we live. We will also compare where we live to somewhere different and talk about the similarities and differences.

 Spring 1- Light and Dark.

Our topic this term is called “Light and Dark”. Through a range of fiction and non-fiction books, we will be learning about light sources. We will talk about natural light sources and man-made. We will complete basic circuit work and delve deeper into wonders of the world by visiting “The Northern Lights” using our VR headsets.

Spring 2- Cymru a fi!

Learning and talking all things “Wales”. We will talk about what makes us proud to e Welsh, Welsh traditions and the beautiful and wonderful places in our country. We will compare the Brecon Beacons to the city centre and Cardiff Bay and learn fantastic new geographical vocabulary. We will look at important Welsh people and artists and even try and recreate their work.

Summer 1- Marvellous Materials.

We will be learning to identify materials and talk about their properties throughout this topic. There will be lots of chances to explore materials by completing mind-blowing investigations. What materials float or sink? What material can hold the most water? What material is the strongest? We will also put a twist on the traditional tale “Jack and the beanstalk” by creating a zip wire for Jack. What materials will work best? How will Jack get down safely? Lots of questions to be answered this half term.

Summer 2- There’s No Business Like Show Business.

Reading in Year 1

Reading at home is very important. Reading for just 10 minutes a day can make a BIG difference. Each week we will be sending reading books home for you to read with your child. Please comment on your child's reading ability in the yellow book before sending the books back to school to be changed. We ask for reading books to be brought in on a Wednesday and will be sent home on a Friday.
