Dear Parents & Carers

We would like to welcome the pupils back for their final time at Bryn Hafod Primary School. We are looking forward to a jam-packed timetable, filled with learning experiences. We have included a few details below that might help you out over the next few weeks as the children settle in.

PE Days

PE days for both classes  this term will be on a Monday.  Children can wear PE kit into school on this day to save changing etc.  Please make sure that children wear suitable footwear for PE e.g. trainers not sandals or football boots.

Tuesday

Reading records will be collected, signed by the class teacher, and returned to pupils.

Friday

Reading records will be collected, signed by the class teacher, and returned to pupils.

Weekly spelling revision and times tables quiz.

New spellings and times tables will be sent home.

Home Reading

Children in Year 5/6 are encouraged to change their reading books when needed. Reading at home is extremely important to your child’s education, so we ask all parents/carers to read with children wherever possible, helping them by starting difficult words for them and ask your own questions along the way about the story and the characters actions in the story.

“Why did he do that?”

“How could she feel now?”

“What may happen next?”

Help them by breaking longer words into sounds.

Water

Please ensure your child brings a bottle of water to school with them. Please avoid providing fizzy drinks and also note that enegy drinks are not allowed.

Applications for High School

Over the next few weeks, we will be informing you that applications for High School are open.  It is important that you complete the online applications before the deadlines given to ensure your child gets a place in your preferred school.  They usually have to be completed by mid  November.  Over the past few years Eastern High and St Iltyds have been oversubscribed so getting your application in on time will ensure that your child has the best possible chance.  I cannot stress this enough as parents over the past few years have been left disappointed.  If you wish to receive support with completing your child’s application, please contact the school in plenty of time to allow us to put a plan in place.

Walking Home

If you wish for your child to walk home from school by themselves, please write a letter to your child’s class teacher providing written consent for your child to do so.  Children without a letter will not be allowed to leave the school premises.

We hope we have your support in helping your child to achieve the very best that they can. It’s going to be a very busy, yet exciting year.

Topic Overviews for Parents

At the Rainbow Federation we operate a 2 year cycle of topics. Cycle A and Cycle B.  This keeps learning fresh, fun and exciting both for the teachers and the pupils. A summary of each of our topics can be found below.  This year in Year 6 the pupils will be studying the topics outlined in Cycle A.

Legacy (Cycle A): The legacy unit is all about exploring the lasting impact of historical events and people. Your child will learn about the legacy of figures like Martin Luther King Jr. and the impact that World War II had on the world. They will explore how these legacies continue to shape our world today and how we can learn from the past to create a better future. Throughout the unit, your child will be encouraged to think critically about issues related to legacy and develop their own ideas about how we can create a more just and equitable world.

Conflict (Cycle A): This unit is all about different types of conflict, such as war and violence, and how they affect people's lives. Your child will learn about the causes and consequences of conflict and explore strategies for resolving conflicts peacefully. They will also have the opportunity to develop empathy and understanding for people who have experienced conflict firsthand. Throughout the unit, your child will be encouraged to think critically about issues related to conflict and develop their own ideas about how we can create a more peaceful world.

Design, Create and Evaluate (Cycle A):   In this exciting topic, your child will have the opportunity to design, create, and evaluate their own board game! They will learn about the different elements of a successful board game, including the theme, gameplay, and rules. They will also explore the importance of collaboration and communication in the game design process.

Throughout the topic, your child will be encouraged to think creatively and develop their problem-solving skills as they work to create a unique and engaging board game. They will have the opportunity to experiment with different game mechanics, materials, and design elements, and to receive feedback from their peers and teachers.

Once their game is complete, your child will have the opportunity to evaluate its success, considering factors such as its level of challenge, replay value, and appeal to different audiences. They will also have the chance to showcase their games to their classmates and celebrate their achievements.

Sustainability (Cycle A): The sustainability unit is all about using resources in a way that meets our needs without harming the planet. Your child will learn about ways to reduce waste and pollution, as well as ways to conserve natural resources like water and energy. They will also explore the concept of sustainable living and learn how they can make a positive impact on the environment through their own actions. Throughout the unit, your child will be encouraged to think critically about issues related to sustainability and develop their own ideas about how we can create a more sustainable world.  Pupils will design and create their own Eco-car!!

Vitality (Cycle A): In this topic under the theme 'vitality', your child will explore the importance of health and wellness in their lives.  Throughout this topic, your child will learn about different aspects of physical and mental health, including exercise, healthy eating, and mindfulness. They will also explore the benefits of staying active and taking care of their bodies and minds.  Your child will have the opportunity to engage in a range of activities related to vitality, including yoga and fitness challenges, cooking and nutrition lessons, and mindfulness exercises. Through this topic, your child will develop their understanding of the factors that contribute to their health and wellness, and they will be encouraged to develop healthy habits that they can carry with them into adulthood. They will also have the opportunity to reflect on the importance of taking care of their mental health and to develop strategies for managing stress and anxiety.  Overall, the vitality topic will provide a valuable learning experience for your child, helping them to develop important skills and knowledge related to health and wellness. If you have any questions or concerns about this topic, don't hesitate to reach out to your child's teacher for more information.
